Your Music

Traditionally, funeral music was limited to classical pieces and hymns, which many families still prefer.

However, for those whose musical tastes may differ and for those who find singing too difficult or simply uncomfortable, it is good to know that most Funeral Chapels now offer the option of playing alternative choices.

Can we still have a hymn?

Yes, of course - although few chapels offer the services of an organist to accompany you, you can opt to have your hymn played from a recording with a choir 'singing for you', so you can either sing along or simply listen. You can choose one or two hymns (depending on the length of your service, which can vary from 20 - 45 minutes) during the body of the service. Another option is to have your chosen hymns played (choral versions) as you enter and / or leave the chapel, if you don't feel up to singing yourselves.

How many pieces of music do we need?

The minimum we suggest is two - one song or piece of music as you enter the chapel, and another as you leave. However, families often choose a third piece to be played after the main address or Eulogy, either as a 'Reflective Piece' or an evocative one, to echo the tastes of the deceased. It is also possible to have recorded music as you enter / leave  and a hymn within the service, if you prefer. See notes above regarding hymns.

Some families choose to use this central piece to come up and pay their individual respects to the deceased. It can provide an accompaniment for those wishing to place tributes or flowers - I have seen many a footbal scarf lovingly placed in these moments!

In the last few years, many chapels have now added digital screens to their chapels, on which individual images, multi-image slideshows and videos may be played. Ask your Funeral Director about the facilities available when talking through your options.

Is it possible to have lots of music?

If your loved-one is a real music lover, or if there are simply too many choices and you want a number of pieces played during the service, you need to consider the amount of time you have available. If you are holding a memorial or celebratory service separately to the Committal / Burial, you can, of course, have anything you wish.

However, once at the Crematorium Chapel, time is likely to be quite limited and your service time will need to accommodate everything you wish included, words, music and readings / prayers. Please check the service time at the chosen chapel as you may wish to consider booking a double slot if you need more time to listen and share. Similarly, if there are likely to be a great many guests you may also consider this option, as the time they take to enter and leave the chapel comes out of your service time.

Is there such a thing as 'inappropriate' music?

Only as far as the taste and tolerance of your invited guests is concerned. I have been asked for an incredible (and sometimes surprising) variety of songs to be played, and always with good reason. My only advice is that the entrance music be of a gentle or sedate pace, as your loved-one is likely to be carried in to it. But I don't recommend you choose a piece with important lyrics or particular meaning, as you are unlikely to register the music as you enter, your mind will almost certainly be elsewhere.

I often recommend choosing a more lively or upbeat song to exit, as it helps you to let go of the sadness you are bound to feel in the chapel during your Goodbye - perhaps something that would make all of you smile, including your loved-one.

I have not yet been asked for a song I felt uncomfortable to include - I often tell families, once you are in the room, it belongs to you, so choose whatever makes you feel easier / better / happier / OK.

What format should the music be in, and do we have to provide it?

That depends on where your service is taking place, so check with your Funeral Director or Arranger, they will help you.

An increasing number of Chapels have either the Wesley or Obitus music systems installed, on which your music can usually be downloaded automatically, ready for your service. Your Funeral Director will know what facilities are available at your chosen chapel - and of course, we can help with music too, when we meet with you.
